Assuming you're coming home and this is the end of the ticket, why don't you buy your separate ticket home to NYC from DTW instead of YYZ and skip the DTW-YYZ leg? Obviously, on the outbound, if you purchased a YYZ-DTW-PVG ticket, you need to go to YYZ, but not on the return.
