With respect to T5:
It probably
could be done at the gate if you did something weird like buy a new ticket when you were already airside.
But usually it will be checked before you go airside at T5.
Any BA check in agent can do this, just go to whatever desk does not have a queue.
Alternatively there are special "visa check" desks that can do it as well and might have a shorter queue.
