An hour is enough time, but obviously doesn't leave a lot of room if things go wrong.

The terminal is compact, you can walk fast from one end to the other in 10 mins. Most of the afternoon JFK flights have a little bit of padding, so even if you leave late or have inbound ATC delays you usually arrive close to scheduled time. I wouldn't worry, if you were to miss it AA will just rebook you on one of their many later flights via LHR or MAD.
