The miles is normally the difference in fare from Y to F and I'm often given the UG for $xxx or xx,xxx miles. When you do this it changes your fare class.
IME those xx,xxx miles are rounded up, not in my favor. For example, a $41 one segment upgrade costs 5,000 miles (or $50 at one cent per mile, a difference of close to 25%).
