Yes, they need to claim a reason for the downgrade. My point was that they often don't (or try not to) compensate the passenger for the downgrade; if the passenger purchased the right to fly in F, then the airline owes compensation for not providing a flight in F.
Ok, and if some DL GA came onto this forum and made a post titled "Downgrading a passenger for no reason on a DL transatlantic flight," then everyone (including me) would chastise that person for doing something illegal and unethical, the exact same way we chastised the OP for his illegal and unethical actions.
