The WiFi doesn't cost anything, it's the cellular data which these systems use. That gets really pricey on a per transaction basis. I doubt that there is much CC fraud and the occasional later declined transaction likely gets made good. AA has other easy remedies most of the time and if it gets hit for a free tube of Pringles now and again, it's not that big a deal.

Cost - benefit suggests this is working just fine.
