I was thinking how this might affect my work situation and I had forehead-smacking moment.
It might not be pertinent to Jon Toner's sitation but here goes.
My job is largely as a consultant with 10-12 clients per year. About 2/3 of my travel is for these clients. Although I submit travel expenses to my company for reimbursement, those expenses are sent to the client as a pass-through cost. So, if you subscribe to the "them's that buys the miles owns the miles" position, my company is not even the buyer, but rather, all those clients. Talk about an accounting nightmare! The other 1/3 of my travel is for and paid by my company, so that travel is more arguable.
All that said, however, I would assume that miles accrued during business travel stays with the passenger.
