I will usually say hello when we are all at the seat... and tell them to let me know if they need to get out of the row (I am always on the aisle). I will then usually put on my noise cancelling headphones and read or rest.

I am not one for small talk with strangers (my introverted nature) and put the headphones on to minimize risk of being talked to during the flight!
