I can do without the salad/sandwiches/cold cuts if it saves me money. After all, that's what the lounges are for.
I increasingly wonder whether there is an unofficial policy of trying to keep the middle seat free for Golds. My last 10 or so SH flights in ET have all had a free middle, despite all around me being fairly full. Anecdote, possibly, but consistent.
