I have had things returned to a "closed" account before --- I just get a statement with the credit on it (even though the acct is "closed"). I then call the CC and ask for a check. Of course, none were for something as large as $977. You may want to call your particular AMEX and ask what happens if a vendor tries to refund on a closed acct.
