Am I reading this thread correctly that if there's a problem with the first flight, neither airline is obligated to fix things?
AA has a policy regarding connections to and from AA on separate tickets, so AA may assist - though since you are on a BA codeshare and not an AA customer, AA may well send you to BA
BA specifically states that with separate tickets , the risk is yours , so you may be down to whatever the fare penalties are
