Maybe I will try to fly UA from SFO-FRA or CDG and upgrade using miles, then connect to LH. (I have never used miles to upgrade on UA, but I guess I can start now.)
I also have TK Elite Plus status so will give the two upgrades a whirl to get at least as far as IST.
I have probably flown paid J/F on around half of my flights to the GCC in recent years (usually on EK or QR, occasionally AF, LH, TK, or a hodge-podge of others), upgraded UA on 40%, and a handful of times through Europe -- if I couldn't confirm the upgrade at booking to the UA flight to DXB/KWI, then my strategy would be to fly through ORD/IAD/EWR and FRA/MUC/ZRH and play the GPU wait-list game (usually unsuccessfully) on the trans-Atlantic segment and the LH GPU game (almost never successfully) on the last segment.
So I will adapt.

UA contacted me -- in mid-January, when my status was set to drop from 1K to nothing, offering a buy-up to Silver. Not particularly savvy given that I had already had enough booked to get me to Silver by the end of the month and was at around 985K lifetime.
