I can't really comment on BA but once I was able to select a premium seat without going through payment on LOT (even though payment was required) it stuck on CMT and I got the seat on the day of my flight as well.
And one of my colleagues was bragging about having been able to use a similar detour to book an elite row seat on AF, and he was quite angry to find that his seat assignment had been over-ridden and that he now had a middle seat with no good seat left.
So no, if your selection of a seat you were not allowed to choose (or not for free anyway) is found out, then the airline will absolutely not feel that it has to honour it.
