It is clear that Silver is very easy to get with FB (particularly if MiNi fares really do earn segments now), even by occasional flyers, and so expecting too much would be naive. Having said that, Platinum benefits are not substantially different from Gold yet Plat status is significantly harder to get, which goes against rational expectations with FB. It seems FB is a programme that tries to attract medium-frequency flyers while neglecting its top tier (and therefore most frequent and also highest spending) clients. This suggests the FB management is confident that its top-tier flyers are too embedded with AF/KL to change even if they are very underwhelmed by the programme. The question is, is FB gaining more money by using the low-threshold Silver to attract low to medium-frequency fliers, than it is losing by letting down its top tier Plats? I would be very interested in seeing if the numbers back it up.
