You're correct. But the world is much different now. Airfares are much lower since deregulation. Babysitters are much more expensive. And maybe most importantly, the new generation of parents are often afraid to let their young children out of their sight for more than a few minutes. That's not a knock on parenting skills, just an observation. It's different than when many of us were children...as to which method works better, only time will tell.
