Mutual accounts are not part of the SPG program, so you each should have your own accounts and flip a coin when staying in the same room and there would be no problem when staying at different properties. There is nothing that prevents you both getting a room of your own as of yet, no hotel property is doing bed checks to find out who's in what room! Points can be merged for those times you need more points that what is in one account, or split the award stays between the two accounts, if feasible (five-night stays best out of one account).
This. YOU CANNOT SHARE AN ACCOUNT. Also, in case you're not aware, your wife is a separate person. You both cannot stay together in a single room, nor is her staying at a hotel the same as your staying at the hotel. Staying oneself means exactly what it says: YOU stay and not some other person, even if the other person is your spouse.
