Quick data point:

Have a reservation for 5 people, to save some $ paid for 3 seat reservations: A and C in one row and A right behind, leaving middle seats open.

Checked-in today at T-24, automatically got B seats for the 2 tickets without seat assignment.

Also, interesting point, I got paid Pre-Check account, entered my number during tickets purchase, all 5 people got Pre-Check.
