Here's what I found odd: for the LHR-LUX, all middle seats were empty up until T-2. The cabin did fill in the back. So I thought that they had either some Lufthansa-style seat blocking, or wouldn't give access to non-status card holders.
At the gate, I was one of the last to board, and I asked whether the seat next to me was still free. They looked on the seat map, and the seat showed as being taken. They offered me another, neighbour-less seat further in the back. The moment I was checked out of my front seat, the neighbouring seat showed to be free as well. And I was put back in my front seat.
So for some reason my "presence" in the front seat seems to have blocked the neighbouring seat.
Something mysterious going on there!
It happens on relatively light loaded flights - way to balance the aircraft without blocking rows and increasing pax comfort. AF does it quite often as well nowadays!
Or if the flight was very full, then that's more personal and someone in BA's offices found out that you were a passenger that they should cherish!
