Of course I argued the policy point, but what you cannot understand is that at some point I was faced with a choice of boarding or not. The points about CE being empty and others getting similar bags onboard, of course they were relevant to show how silly everyone was being about my request for someone to reevaluate. I actually thought the fact that someone from economy threw an oversized bags up above me was exactly the sort of thing a customer facing employee would understand would further frustrate a disgruntled customer. But alas...
No, this was not meant as condescending at all. It is just my experience as someone with a natural tendency to go into details myself that when facing with situations like the one you are in, it tends to work best to stick to what is very directly relevant and not depart from it.

As mentioned, I think it is not acceptable that a CE passenger with hand luggage within the policy would be picked upon to check it in and I would write to complain mentioning exactly that. I can only repeat that if it were me I would simply mention that and leave the fact that you were boarding early and so on out as I do not think that they are either needed or add anything to your complaint - to me it is enough that someone with hand luggage within BA's guidelines travelling in CE should not be made to check it in and that is worthy of a complaint.
