To the OP: too often in this place people come to vent in a rage and it turns out that the waters are a little muddier than first portrayed, so please forgive us if the default is healthy skepticism, but I would agree that on this flight you were treated unfairly and have every right to be upset. I take some measure of pride in having bags that are the correct size and turning up at the gate in good time and I would be pretty miffed to be waiting 30mins at the other end for bags to come off the belt because I had an enforced bag check on a flight where there was plenty of space in the overheads.
Last on and no space is a different scenario and in that case you take it on the chin.
