I prefer the neighbourhood just a little north of the Ramblas - L'Eixample. Great architecture, very stylish, great shopping, less crowded with tourists and pickpockets - but within a few minutes walk of Ramblas and its attractions. I stayed at a nice 3* star Derby hotel (the Astoria), but there are a couple of more luxurious hotels in the chain (Claris 5*, Derby 4* and Gran Derby 4*). The Claris might be the best location.
