German passport here. E-gates always work at EDI and AMS and only occasionally at LHR T5. There seems to be an issue with the e-gates at Heathrow or so I was told by one of the border force agents last time I was there (December '15). The e-gate wouldn't read my passport but his computer would scan it without any issues.
