It's about the same in reverse: you'll get a BA PNR, and on BA.com you can manipulate the CE legs.
Note that AA has a quirk where seats can't be selected for about 24 hours during ticketing, then they reappear later, so make sure you get it right before sending it off to ticketing with final payment. If buying on BA.com you don't actually have this problem since ticketing is almost instant and you can manipulate seats more easily. On a few ex US Airways legacy flights you may struggle to select seats before OLCI (paradoxically it's easier if they are BA codeshared and booked on BA, but it is getting less and less often now).
Don't be surprised - if booking on AA.com - that at OLCI you don't get a boarding pass for any sector that is international or leads into one that is, they often want to see your passport, or you need scan it via the kiosk, just AA's little annoyance for the HBO traveller.
For the 77W, I think you'd be very unlucky to get the slopy seat to or ex LAX since presumably they'd have to send one over from somewhere like MIA or DFW. It's more likely they'd cancel the service and re-route you (probably on BA!). But though I've not checked the data, I'm sure we are sub 5% here, and there's no certainties with air travel anyway.
