If you want to avoid JNB then you'll have to do MUC or IST....or ADD but not sure if that's in the cards for your sightseeing city.

I would do JFK-IST-CPT-JNB-LHR-EWR getting to spend some time in both Istanbul and London and only have to do JNB on the way out of ZA.
