I think NZ used to give you the allowance of the class you had requested an upgrade to...but I think that was discontinued
I was not aware that it had been discontinued. I am curious how they can manage it in practice. If your upgrade does not clear until the gate, do they first charge you at check in and refund you at the gate or later? I doubt they will have this process in place.
