Closed previous SPG card in May of 2015.

Applied for new card from a friend's referral link on January 10th. My card arrived on the 17th, and I made a $500 purchase that day. I referred my girlfriend for a card on the 24th of January, and it was conditionally approved. She did not call until the 27th to confirm the remaining information, and was approved at that time.

Imagine my surprise to see my first statement, dated January 26th (the day BEFORE she finalized her application) and 30,000 SPG points - 20k for my welcome bonus and 10k for her referral.

I was quite surprised that I got the referral credit before she activated, made a purchase, etc.
