ITA doesn't run a inventory query on the real live system each time you run a search, the airlines & GDS operators would not be very happy about that, especially when running it for a free tool where there is a clear statement that there will be no sale from it.
If a smart call center agent waitlists your enquiry (into P for example) it usually clears shortly afterwards if it was offered for sale in a different market. You can also call the airline in the US, the agents picking up the call there are usually logged in with an office ID of the US market and can also see the inventory. You could also waitlist with the european agent and then call the US call center and say if they can check if they have availability now. Smart TAs have multiple office IDs in various markets for that.
Thanks for the more detailed explanation...
So, from what I read here, ITA doesn't run live inventory queries, but instead uses cached data...the question is how old is the data? is it being updated at pre-set intervals or just whatever is lying around?
Good idea for calling the US agents if they have a different inventory due to their location. I have actually always called the US call center, not for the reasons you highlight, but simply because its free. calling the 0848 number in CH costs money, but since I have free minutes on my mobile to the US, its free for me to call the US call center (which is usually routed to the South African one at night)
