Edit: Agent claims that on her end the itinerary still shows the original purchase price. She told him "don't worry, you are locked in at the original price." but the pending charge on his CC is for the higher price. I told him to call back (unfortunately, he's in North Jersey and I'm in Philly).

So now United is claiming that they see no record of the original purchase price and the email we received but have "been an error." So I guess we will cancel and file a DOT complaint.
That's an Agent just trying to get your partner off the phone. I don't think you ever actually spoke to Web Support as they wouldn't say that to you once you told them of the discrepancy of display price vs. confirmed email cost.

They should still be able to replicate it. I would try one more time before going the DOT route as they actually have the capability to reconstruct your fare, but it'll take some work on your part.
