How much time do you have? If you want to hit the tourist sights of NYC and you have several hours, from Newark's Penn Station, you can take the PATH train to the World Trade Center or NJ Transit to New York's Penn Station and walk to the Empire State Building or Times Square (or both).
Otherwise, walk to Ironbound for a great meal.
