I checked quite a few threads and could not find an answer to this - apologies if has been asked before.

I need some assistance:

I have booked a promotion fare from ATL to DUR roundtrip. The class is W from ATL to IST and V from IST to DUR

I am currently at Platinum with United Mileage Plus and found out that W does not accrue any mileage and only 50% with V. Also was informed that I cannot use any United miles to upgrade from W or V.

Would it be better if I joined Miles & Smile and asked for a status match to United? Would I get any benefits on Miles & Smiles on W and V class fares if they matched status?
