In any case, passport information can always be updated at a checkin counter before you travel, and probably by phone beforehand if the web interface won't do it.

The main issue (for me, anyway) is that this has impact for online check-in. There are nebulous agents (processes, not people) at work here making this more complex than it needs to be, IME. The matching that's done at check-in is not clear to me in the face of a passport change:
1. Can one leave the old number (if that's what's in there), check-in against the old number successfully (to get a BP) and then change at the airport?
2. Can one change to the new passport number in the record "right before" check-in and still have t work against the new number? (It didn't for us, and the update in the account over a month earlier never propagated to the PNR).
3. How long in advance does one need to change the passport number in the PNR for the match to work for check-in?
Definitely none of these are a big deal for actual flying as this can all be done at the airport. But it does impact OLCI for the flights.
Cheers.
