Who booked the tickets does not matter -- 1Ks can guest up to 8 people, regardless of PNR distribution, into E+ when on the same flights.
But we are getting a bit OT.
As for the original issue, the paired seating, I would find this an interesting
change and one I would be surprised if UA has implemented.
