You should still be able to call and get the seating for the legs you're together (and depending on the agent they may comp it for the entire itinerary but that's a nicety -- on the flights where you are traveling together it's an entitlement), the other itineraries is a great reason for why you aren't on the same PNR (I've done the same for my boss under the same situation [less the "different countries" part])
