I had the distinct displeasure of flying Air Yemenia AUH-ADE (don't ask), in coach, on an old B-727, during Ramadan. Muslims refrain from smoking during the day during the holiday, as well as eating and drinking. As soon as the sun went down, the whole airplane lit up. The smoke was incredible. One passenger attempted to put out his cigarette in the ashtray in his armrest. Problem was, the ashtray was gone and the hole was stuffed with trash, napkins, and food wrappers. Another passenger helpfully put out the smoldering armrest with his bottled water. This, along with the exposed wiring running above the overhead bins spliced with electrical tape (not even the same color insulation), convinced me to fly Royal Jordanian on the way home.
