What prices are you getting from the DL and AC websites?
If you end up redeeming AA miles, you might be able to find SAAver awards, since from STL, AA can route you via six different connecting cities to get to YUL. And AA now allows up to 18 hours to connect on award travel to/from Canada -- but aa.com might not price such a long connection correctly.
Do you mean I can find a better award deal if I call AA over the phone?
Yes and no. I mean that aa.com might price an 18-hour connection as two separate awards. The work-around is to put the two award flights on hold (do not purchase) using the multi-city award-booking engine on aa.com. Note your record locator, and then call AA to have an agent re-price the held itinerary as a single award. You can then go back to aa.com and book the re-priced itinerary as a single award (unless the agent is willing to waive the telephone-ticketing fee in those circumstances).
Note that YUL occasionally appears on the list of "reduced-mileage awards" available to AA credit-card holders. You should know by May whether YUL will be on such destination for July travel. Reduced-mileage awards can only be booked by phone. Details here:
