I don't have much experience with award flights, so if there is some non-trivial strategy in my case (eg using Korean Air or British Air), please let me know.

If you end up redeeming AA miles, you might be able to find SAAver awards, since from STL, AA can route you via six different connecting cities to get to YUL. And AA now allows up to 18 hours to connect on award travel to/from Canada -- but aa.com might not price such a long connection correctly.
Do you mean I can find a better award deal if I call AA over the phone?
