I think that what you are pointing out: MiNi/classic combination is precisely the only exception and indeed absolutely correct.

My understanding is that at least for long haul, if you book an return trip with the outbound in J and the return in Y, the J allowance applies to the entire trip (including the Y return which also has the J luggage allowance).
