I think your Ambassador status and how frequently you stay at that hotel may make a difference in what benefits you get on your rewards nights.
No real value. Any Hotel willing to allow you stay in same room for award nights will do so without prompting before arrival, and the hotels who move guests will politely advise you by return email that they can not merge reservations as they've a different room category and would you like to pay to keep room instead of moving
Hotels are much more likely to move you if you book your 1x paid night several categories above points award room type and/or book 1paid night and multi nights award type.
Booking multiple paid and 1-2 award nights of 1cat less than paid is usually acceptable though or you can suggest you will forgo paid night upgrades to get award night upgraded to paid night type instead
To be honest I typically avoid mixing paid+award nights on a stay. The only reason I do mix is if booking non-cancel rates and I book award as first and/or last night as awards are flex-cancelable when I fly trans-continental trips
