Amex Canada (CDW) car rental insurance - renting in Japan?

Hi all,

Curious if anyone has experience with this. Not sure if this should go into the Japan forum or not, as well, so mods - please move if appropriate (but the Japanese Amex is a bit different, so I'm not sure whether the question will be as applicable).

The Canadian Amex Platinum has car insurance, as we know. It protects the vehicle and so on, which is ok. In Japan, all car rental companies have something optional: "menseki hosho", "免責補償", which I was never able to get a decent explanation on on _what it is_, but I believe it to be liability insurance - it is certainly not insurance on the car itself (in fact, a number of places I've rented didn't even offer *car* protection, only this liability insurance).

So what I'm wondering is this: if I refuse this "menseki hosho" and have an accident, what will Amex cover - if anything?

Thanks!
