What I see is that it either clears for me almost irrespective of the booking class, or it does not. Very rarely do I win a battlefield where I am near certain there are other 1Ks behind me on lower fare classes.
As a GS I missed 4 out of 5 RPUs YTD on lower fares, while even 1Ks had CPUs clearing ahead of my RPU . I even had the gate agent pull ahead a 1K behind me on #1 of the upgrade list, when one seat opened up after boarding ended.
Fare class only influences the position within a tier as long as nobody takes any action to override that manually !
