As britenbsas says, the staff in Tesco stores often make up their own rules as they go along. In the Tesco near me they often only do £100's worth in one transaction, they refuse to do any more. But that's no particular hardship, I only tend to put £50 or £100 worth through anyway in any one visit along with my grocery shop, unless I have a large Ticketmaster etc purchase in mind. Then I have to do multiple transactions or my OH go to the till next to me etc.
IIRC, the gift cards making up the £100 need to be breakable into £50 chunks. i.e. 5 x £20 does not earn 300 Clubcard points.
