Dubai hotels take down the name of all guests, and frequently they ask for passports to be presented if they take you to be a foreigner.

It's sort of like it's in India: some small risk of getting in trouble with the law, but also ways to minimize the odds of getting in trouble.

The suggestion to change hotels and use an email address that doesn't reveal the nature of organizational affiliation may be a smart one.
