Doesn't surprise me - but for a variety of reasons I only use AMEX when traveling internationally, so it's never been a significant problem for me. It seems AMEX is less sensitive on their AVS responses at gas stations, which is very useful (although I understand Canadians/UKians with their alphanumeric post codes have problems).

I'm always surprised when I see EMV card readers that work (and sales associates that know what to do) here. Walgreens and Home Depot are the only two that I regularly go to which support EMV chip+sig. Haven't tried a chip+PIN card, as while I have them, the only card I regularly carry that supports chip+PIN only supports it at unattended kiosks.
