There are still plenty of IL-62 abut in former Soviet states, though they don't fly many hours per year. Aeroflot still has some. It was in production until into the early 1990s.
There are plenty of rival aircraft that have come out looking pretty much the same. Look at the 707-vs-DC8. Putting the engines at the back rather than on the wing is what you do for better takeoff performance, at the expense of efficiency in the cruise, which is what the VC-10 was aiming at over the 707/DC8 (it was designed for British "Colonial" services to airports with short runways), and presumably this was a design aim of the Soviets as well.
