However, it is very much possible to renew an ESTA before it expires if one wishes to. I did this before my last trip as it was due to expire mid-trip and I'd rather have the first entry at Shannon instead of in a long line in the US to make sure I could use the machines as re-entry ESTA.
Technically it's not possible. You can buy a new one whenever you want, but you can't renew an existing one.
A bit semantic, but that's the reason why that email says you can't renew.
