I do pretty much the same and put a big rubber band (like the kind the mailman puts on letter bundles) along the spine so it hangs on but is easy to remove and put back.

The GE machines generally work better with the cover off and CBP almost always asks me to remove it, as does Mexican Immigrations (I have NEXUS so Canada is never a problem).

The same is true about removing the covers for the few times I have had to check in using kiosks.
