I seem to have this same issue with Uber, although the pin is correct on MY screen, it's just that for some reason the driver sees it somewhere else.

That said, I don't use Uber here much, because, as you say, it's usually faster/easier just to stick my arm out.
3) It was the driver's first time using the system as well, and it took him a few minutes to figure out how to activate it to show that I was in the cab. I didn't want to cancel as there is a $2 penalty (not sure exactly when it kicks in).
On Way2Ride, I don't think the driver has to do anything. The passenger is responsible for entering the code on the TV monitor (not sure why they don't just use the medallion number...), and then the system knows the ride is in progress.
Overall, I used it to pay and it was pretty seamless, and faster than swiping a physical card. I didn't use the app to hail a cab. (Again, stick arm up
