I always purchase through American websites, so I can cancel for free within 24 hours if there's no availability and not receiving an e-ticket right away is a problem but I'm glad it works out in the end.
Could you describe a little better what the problem is if the successful free upgrade is not accompanied by the ticket immediately? You'll not have bought anything and whether you cancel within 24 hours or later, it doesn't matter. At any rate, if there is no availability, you'll have found out while booking and not after receiving the ticket. In other words, I'm utterly confused with what you write.
