Good advice on the other thread. I agree, you and the family should easily have 1-2 hours of time in AMS. The transportation to/from the airport is second to none. And, Central Station truly is in the heart of Amsterdam. Take a shower, enjoy the short train ride to Central Station, then walk around and soak up the atmosphere and beauty.
