No need (or way) to book in advance, its like the subway or an elevated train in Chicago. As for how close to the airport, I'm not sure... I AM sure there are shuttles from the airport stop to the airport itself, though.

South Florida doesn't have a great public transport system if you have to go anywhere the monorail/trirail doesn't go, but if you stick to its path, you're fine.
